Having trouble finding a domain name for your business? You’re not alone. Choosing a domain can be a time-consuming process.
To help out, Verisign, the company that manages the .com and .net domain names, created a nifty, data-driven tool call DomainScope to help you find a good domain name for your business. It goes well beyond most domain name generators.
How to Get Started
This might give you ideas for words you can add to domain names that aren’t otherwise available. As you can see, a lot of people add words like online, group, and web to the end of words to find an available domain name.
You can even see lists of actual domain names that were recently registered to get inspiration.
Move down one tab to “Domain Suggestions” and you’ll find a keyword-based tool for finding domains. Type in a keyword that describes your business and get a list of available domain names.
DomainScope has a unique feature that generates names based on where you are located. I typed the word invest and got these results:
Because I live in Austin, Texas, the names it generated are for neighborhoods and surrounding cities in the area.
You can turn this feature off if your business is more global in nature. You can also have the search generate synonyms or add common domain endings (such as online).
One cool feature in DomainScope translates your keyword into different languages. Even if your business targets an English audience, using a common word in a different language can be a great way to differentiate your business and find an available domain name.
Find Abandoned Domains
DomainScope also has an option to find domain names with existing traffic. Usually, these are domain names that were owned by someone else who created a website and then abandoned the domain name. Once a domain name expires it becomes available for someone else (like you!) to register.
So if your creative juices need a little inspiration, give DomainScope a spin to find your next great domain name… and then register it at Namecheap!
